The inspiration
Inspired by 17th-century Indo-Portuguese papeleras, the Alcázar Cabinet draws on a furniture tradition that emerged from the meeting of European design and the decorative techniques of Indian cabinetmakers.
Its decoration combines ebony and chechen veneers with bone inlays and imitation tortoiseshell, forming intricate geometric patterns across the drawers, central door, and sides. Antiqued iron hardware complements the ornamental richness of the cabinet, characteristic of furniture commissioned for the nobility and grand residences of the period.
In contrast, the supporting console offers a contemporary interpretation, with clean lines, slender legs, and antiqued brass details. Its lighter proportions balance the decorative richness of the upper cabinet, allowing both the complexity of the marquetry and the elegance of the structure to be appreciated.
Together, the Alcázar Cabinet and Console combine the ornamental tradition of Indo-Portuguese furniture with a contemporary approach to design, where each piece retains its own identity while complementing the other.
